ST GEORGES BASIN DRAGONS SENIOR MENS FOOTBALL
28 JULY 2018
Saturday 28th July saw our Basin men’s 1st & 2nd & 3rd Grades at home to Gerringong - results were mixed with both 1st & 2nd Grades losing in close games, while 3rd Grade had a hard earned draw.
Even though we did not accumulate many points, all three grades performed well and were strong in every contest.
3rd Grade – 1-1 DRAW

2nd Grade – 0-3 loss
Coach Martin Warner had the following to say regarding Saturday’s game:
“A game where Basin Football really stood up and challenged the very strong Gerringong outfit.
Once again we had chances to score but to no avail. Then, as ½ time came up, they managed to score one past us to give them the lead.
The second half was much the same, an entertaining match, but we allowed them to score another two goals to make the final score 0-3 for us.
A challenge has now been issued to the team to all turn up to training so that we can finish the season off on a high – by winning the final four – very winnable games.”
1st Grade – 0-1 LOSS
After a very hard fought draw last week against fourth placed Husky, we now faced 2nd placed Gerringong.
What another entertaining game of football it turned out to be!
In a high quality, fast paced game of continuous attack & counter attack, our defence stood rock solid until a small error just before half time let them score.
Having just beaten them in the past two meetings, it was evident from their reaction how much that goal meant to them.
There was no panic at half time and the Coaching staff pointed out a few areas where we could improve our game.
Following some excellent flowing play, we made a number of chances, but could not find that elusive goal.
Young keeper Steve King played another blinder and continues to improve each game.
It was a really good to see young Fraser ‘Froggy’ MacQueen play the full 90 minutes after suffering a knee injury last week and he fought hard all match.
In a really good team display, our back four are playing better every game and it is so good for the club to have the quality we do in that defensive line-up.
Young guns Wade Garin & Tyrone Nye-Williams combine so well with the old stagers George Haberley & Ben Cubbo in defence, while youngsters Connor ‘Junior’ McLean & Fraser ‘Froggy’ MacQueen are combining well with seasoned vets Brendan Hobbs & Simon Cubbo in midfield.
Finally up front old hand Dane McGinn is bringing out the best in his young co-striker Connor MacQueen and both are scoring quite a few goals this season.
All going well, we should have another youngster Jake Moffatt available next week, while the youngest of the playing roster Zac Stahlhut is improving each outing.
As a coach, one feels pride in this team and their achievements with such a small roster at hand.
In summary, it was another great game of football and the rivalry between Basin & Gerringong continues to grow – but the matches are all played with plenty of feeling & respect for each other.
There are only 4 more games this season and our challenge is to win them all.
Next week, the 4th August, all three grades will be at away to play Illaroo.
Please come along and support your local Club – the more spectators that turn up to watch means a much better atmosphere for the game.
