19 AND 20 MAY

The weekend of the 19th & 20th May saw the Mens Senior teams play away to Gerringong on Saturday then back up and play the local derby versus Huskisson on the Sunday.

3rd Grade – 2-1 win over Gerringong, 2-2 draw against Huskisson.
Co-Coach and reknowned author Graham McOmish has filed reports on both of the games that can be read here.

2nd Grade – 0-3 loss to Gerringong
Coach Martin Warner had the following to say regarding Saturday’s game:
“Although we lost 3-0, the character of the team continues to shine through.
The boys tried hard and on many occasions looked really strong and fluent with the ball at our feet.
We experimented with a new formation and the boys started to adapt well to this style.
In a real team effort, you could not single out any one player.
If we stick at it and train together, a win is just around the corner.

2nd Grade – 1-3 loss to Huskisson
Coach Martin Warner had the following to say regarding Sunday’s game:
“Although the result was a loss, the boys showed some excellent patches of passing and teamwork.
Going into the ½ time break down 3-0, it could have been easy to throw in the towel, but encouraging words from Jimmy Dixon, Ash Hale and Jack Eastwood lifted the team.
In an excellent turnaround, they won the second half 1-0 and are now looking forward to building on this momentum over the next few games as the boys deserve a win.”

1st Grade – 2-1 win over Gerringong
What an absolute cracker of a game this was against a classy, well drilled opposition.
The game was a wonderful exhibition of fast paced, skilful attack & counter attack by both squads.
A powerful buildup saw Connor MacQueen score the first goal for the team – a lead we took to the halftime break.
The second half saw more of the same football – with Dane McGinn scoring our second goal.
Gerringong never gave up, and came back strongly to bring the score back to 2-1, but we continued the hard work to finally get the win.
This proved to the team that last year’s win over Gerringong was not a fluke.
All the players, including sub Owen Browne gave 100% all game – you could not single out an individual in an inspiring team effort.

1st Grade – 0-3 loss to Huskisson
Unfortunately, Saturday’s game took it’s toll on the small squad we have.
The boys were physically knackered from the Gerringong game, but more importantly they were mentally flat and could not find the same adrenaline surge from the previous day to lift them.
In saying this, they were very competitive against a young Huskisson team that play a very fast paced & expansive game.
Good luck to them as they took the points on the day, but pencil in the date of Saturday 21st July as this is the return match – all I will say is beware the wounded Dragon!
We now focus our attention to next Saturday where all three grades take on Illaroo at home.
Many thanks to Rachel & Brad Marks, Tam Lee, Lucy Brown and all the people who helped out in the canteen, BBQ etc.
It was good to see quite a few of the players step up and cook the BBQ etc, but we need more players to step up and help out – it is good for Club spirit.

Here is the roster for next Saturday 26th May:
12 to 1pm – Canteen and BBQ to be manned by 2nd Grade
1 – 2.30 – Canteen and BBQ to be manned by 1st Grade
2.30 – 4 – Canteen and BBQ to be manned by 3rd Grade
4 – 5 – Canteen and BBQ to be manned by 2nd Grade
Each shift to be manned by 3-4 players or wives or girlfriends or friends or parents etc – you can sort this out.
It was really great to see the crowd that turned up on Sunday and even more pleasing to see how many players and families stayed back after the game to share a few beers.
Please come and support your Basin Dragons next Saturday at home against Illaroo – should be some good football on the day.
