TUESDAY 15 MAY 2018 LADIES 3RD GRADE

Basin vs Gerringong: 1-1
Tuesday saw the 3rd grade ladies (or as we like to call ourselves – the old girls) travel to Gerringong on what was a surprisingly mild night, but it soon became apparent that the weather was the only ‘mild’ thing that Gerringong had in store for us! With Bec and Tam out injured and Nic wanting a run, the Goalie Jersey was up for grabs and somehow through the barrage of volunteers, Rach managed to secure the job! The game started off pretty scrappy on our behalf and pretty dirty on theirs.
To calm our keeper’s nerves, we’d promised a strong back-line (not hard to do, when our backs are so strong anyway). Lou and Molly protected the flanks and Mandy & Tam did their usual jobs of utilising their speed to clean up anything that managed to get through the girls.
The first goal was to Gerringong and as soon as it went in, I ashamedly could be heard on the sideline saying ‘good goal.’ It looked quite crowded in the box and Rach really didn’t stand a chance of stopping it. Leigh was added to the back line to help out with defence, then got the job of marking a player, who’s numbers had a 7 and a 1 in it (not necessarily in that order, her numbers may or may not have been mixed around to protect her identity). Leigh was fast to learn that her role in defence had quickly changed to one of self-defence! She spent the rest of the game trying not retaliate to some very dirty play. Colleen got fed the ball on the left wing and used her speed and agility to get close enough to have a very cool, calm and collected shot at what was, a cracker of a goal! 1-1 at half time.
Second half saw Kate put her netball skills to good use as keeper, saving lots and keeping the score where it was. Unfortunately injury required us to sub our goalie and Muz (who’d just been complaining about getting cold in the role of striker) was about to find out how warm you can get in goals when you’re getting peppered with shots and the adrenaline is pumping. She did well not to let any in. The second half was generally all in Gerringong’s favour and saw the only linesman, end up with icicles forming off his nose as we just couldn’t get the ball up the other end of the field to make him run.
Cool as always ‘mum’ aka. Browny led some great moments of soccer and was unlucky not to get a goal, with her couple of attempts being slightly off-target. Unfortunately, we let their dirty tactics get to us and we were probably lucky to keep it at a draw.
Onward and upward from here girls – see you all at training!
