3rd GRADE MATCH REPORT 14 APRIL 2018
3rd Grade – Win 3-1
The second round of the season saw the Basin 3rd grade taking on Bomaderry away from home. A big effort from the boys today saw them taking all 3 points, a strong defensive effort, particularly in the second half was extremely pleasing to see and play alongside, especially with the considerable wind against us.
The game started well for our boys, dominating the first 10-15 minutes of football and getting ourselves ahead rather quickly, pressing well, we ended up with a corner, excellent delivery into the box saw Lachlan Mellier rise above all challengers and hammer it home past a hapless goalkeeper who could do nothing but pick the ball out of his net. 1-1However, the adage proved true, that you are most vulnerable after you score a goal and after working hard to get the lead, a small lapse in concentration allowed Bomaderry to bounce back, a well timed cross and finish left us 1-1 shortly after.
Basin wouldn't let that keep them down for long and following a foolish challenge outside the box we were awarded with a free kick. Graham McOmish had an excellent attempt at a far post cross, only for it to be heavily wind assisted over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net, giving us a deserved lead back at 2-1.
Basin learned from their previous goal and were extremely focused defensively, not allowing another lapse in concentration and protecting the lead extremely well. Just before the end of the half, a well timed run from George Brown, following a lovely through ball, saw him burst into the opponents penalty box and around the keeper only to be brought down before he could slot home a third. However this lead to the referee giving us a penalty and up stepped the cool, calm and collected Dayne Spalding, 3-1.
Being up by 2 goals going into the second half, an emphasis was put on a strong defensive effort and the boys did not disappoint, everyone in the back line standing out and having a top game, Basin saw out the contest for the remainder of this half and didn't really look like losing their lead. 3-1 the final score and first points on the board, onward and upwards for this group!!!
Special thanks to Dave Duffy for running the subs bench and Andrew Mellier filling in as a midfielder. Special mention to Dayne Spalding, Lawrence Kinnear, Nick Abel, Elaan Duffy and Mitch Thompson who all had excellent games.
