MATCH REPORT 7 APRIL 2018

The first round of the 2018 competition season commenced for the Senior Men’s teams this Saturday 07/04/2018 against the Culburra Cougars at home.

We came away with no points on the day, but good performances were put up by all three teams.

3rd Grade – lost 2-3

A great start with George Brown scoring our first goal in the first 3 minutes of play, but Culburra hit back with two goals before ½ time.

Encouraging words from player/coaches Chris Brown & Graham McOmish at the break saw the team re-group and play more fluent football in the second half with Graham putting away the equaliser.

Football can be a cruel game with Culburra scoring the winning goal with a good header from a corner with less than a minute to go before the final whistle.

Special mention to Dayne Spalding, Isaac Grainger & Lachy Mellier who all had excellent games.

3rd Grade debuts made by youngsters Mitchell Thompson, Marley Thomas, Cody Rodriguez, Archie Brown & Joe Michaels – and they will all be better for the run next week.

2nd Grade – lost 1-2

A very even game with Jacob Insley scoring a great goal prior to the break.

Culburra then scored around 15 minutes into the second half to even up the match.

As per the 3rd grade game & the cruelty of football – a defensive lapse saw the opposition score the winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Special mention to Jack Eastwood & Owen Browne who were outstanding in a good team effort.

2nd Grade debuts were made by youngsters Lachy Dixon, Zac Stahlhut & Jai Duffy, while converted young goalkeeper Jacob Insley showed what potential he has as a field player in this grade.

Coach Martin Warner was very happy with his charges and they will only continue to improve under his guidance.

!st Grade – lost 2-4

The Culburra Cougars have been finalists, premiers & competition winners in this grade for the past zillion years and have always been known for combining a very physical style with skilful football.

A soft defensive error saw them take the lead in the first two minutes of the game – not the ideal start when chasing a team of this quality.

Some good constructive attacking play saw Basin’s Dane McGinn with a controlled finish to even the scores.

The game threatened to explode on several occasions with some heavy contact and several heated exchanges and this caused Basin to lapse in concentration with the opposition scoring another soft goal to take the lead.

Basin then gave up two more goals while chasing the game in the second half – caught out by excellent counter attacking football.

As is the norm with Basin, this squad will fight to the 90th minute.

A great run from Centre Back led to a skilful interchange around Culburra’s penalty box with new captain Brendan Hobbs putting away Basin’s second goal.

Tyrone Nye-Williams had an outstanding game at right back with a special thank you to O/35’s keeper Colin Crangle who played a blinder for us while we try to fill the 1st Grade keeper role.

Special mention to Zac Stahlhut on playing his first 20 minutes as a sub in 1st grade and playing well.

Overall, the coaching staff were pleased with how the day went in general, but now have more of an idea as to where improvements can be made.

These corrections & improvements are done at training, but we need all the players there to achieve this. Please advise your coaches if you cannot attend training.

Off the field our Fitness Coach Keith Graham & Goalkeeper Coach Peter Watts continue to bring more professionalism to this club.

We still require the assistance of a Manager/s for the three teams and would love the assistance of anyone with Strapping experience to mainly help with 1st Grade.

Please come and share the joys as a part of a Saturday at the football – we could use your help

Round 2 doesn’t get any easier as the three teams are all away to Bomaderry next Saturday.

As stated in my earlier note, our aim this year is to continue building on last year’s results on the paddock but to also continue building a family friendly culture at the Club where all can feel welcome.

Hope to see you there supporting your local club.
